5 Ways for Kansas City Seniors to Stay Active
Physical activity is a vital part of maintaining health in aging seniors. It increases strength and mobility, improves mental health, elevates mood and gives seniors a chance to participate in something social. Here are some ideas for getting your loved one moving:
- Walking: There are plenty of beautiful walking paths in and around our metro area—from Loose Park in Kansas City to Indian Creek Trail in Overland Park and Olathe. Walking improves circulation, strengthens muscles, controls weight and decreases the risk of developing osteoporosis, arthritis, hypertension or heart disease.
- Gardening: Make something beautiful while keeping your body active. Gardening helps with senior mobility and flexibility, prevents diseases like osteoporosis, reduces stress and produces healthy food options like home-grown fruits, vegetables and herbs. Locally, Powell Gardens and Kansas City Community Gardens offer a range of gardening classes for adults.
- Yoga: It’s never too late to get started in yoga. Not only does it encourage relaxation, ease pain and improve flexibility, but yoga’s low-impact movements can be done at any age and at any skill level. Check out The Zen Zone in Lees Summit, which offers a twice-a-week Chair Yoga class that’s targeted at seniors and those with limited mobility.
- Swimming: If you can squeeze in 30 minutes of swimming a few times a week, you’ll be working out your entire body—lungs, heart, muscles and joints. Swimming is one of the most impactful exercises for seniors. The YMCA , Prairie Life Fitness and Lifetime Fitness offer adult swimming classes and lap time in Kansas City.
- Water Aerobics: Water aerobics uses the natural resistance of water and simple movements to “improve cardiovascular health, increase strength and slow down age-related loss of muscle mass.” ( Source ) Classes are also a fun and social group activity that will help seniors meet new people, interact with community programs and feel better about themselves overall. KC Parks & Rec and the YMCA are great resources for local water aerobics classes.
